Sun spots, age spots, €œliver€ spots €“ these are names for the small brown spots that sometimes appear on your face and hands, caused by photodamage, or sun exposure. These solar lentigenes can emerge at any age and on any skin type, although people with light skin are most susceptible. Over time, the spots can darken or even grow to become unsightly €˜splotches.'

The best prevention, of course, is daily sunscreen. For those who haven't been careful in the sun, lasers can help restore even skin tone.

Melanin is what gives our skin its color. Dark or light complexioned, we all have varying amounts of melanin. Pigmented lesions are dark in color simply because melanin is abnormally concentrated in one area of the skin. High concentrations of melanin can be due to various factors. Some types are present at birth, but most occur with age or as a result of overexposure to the sun's damaging rays.

Pigmented lesions can be successfully lightened or removed with modern laser technology. A laser removes pigmented lesions with the energy of light. A laser is designed to produce one or more specific light wavelengths which are absorbed by the pigment. Our lasers treat superficial brown blemishes and are also effective in removing other brown marks like café au lait patches, Nevus of Ito, Nevus of Ota, freckles and flat pigmented moles. A few kinds of pigmentation (in particular melasma) do not improve in response to any form of laser treatment.

The Revlite and Medlite of Q-Switched YAG lasers are the most advanced lasers available today for the removal of pigmented lesions. They provide the appropriate wavelength of light for absorption of abnormal melanin concentrations. They deliver the light in very short, high intensity pulses for maximum melanin destruction. The use of this specific combination of wavelength and rapidly pulsed light results in minimal damage to normal skin while providing maximum abnormal melanin removal. The PhotoAcoustic energy of the MedLite C6 or RevLite safely targets the individual spots, gently breaking the pigment into tiny particles. You'll notice the spot turning gray or white for a few minutes, a natural response of the skin as it absorbs the energy. The spot will then turn darker and sloughs off completely within one to two weeks. At this point, lighter skin starts to blend in as it heals, promoting an even toned appearance.

The Cutera LimeLight delivers a non-invasive light treatment that can be customized for different skin tones and aging skin conditions. The result is an exceptionally effective skin rejuvenation treatment with minimal discomfort. Cutera LimeLight treats pigment, hair (even light colors), and telangectasias (tiny dilated capillaries).
