Why do we use lasers to remove tattoos?

Laser light = energy

Lasers emit energy in the form of light ... this energy is directed at your tattoo through the layers of your skin.

How does it work?

Laser energy is directed at the tattooed area for a fraction of a second, passing harmlessly through the outer layer of the skin and targeting the tattoo ink directly. The laser disrupts the ink, allowing your body to absorb it and break it down naturally.

How does it feel?

Some people describe laser tattoo removal as feeling like a rubber band snapping on the skin, or the same feeling as getting a tattoo, but it takes far less time! Before treatment, we numb the area with a topical anesthetic cream. Coupled with our advanced in-treatment cooling system, you'll be assured the most comfortable experience.

How many treatments are needed?

During your consultation, we estimate the number of treatments it will take to remove your tattoo using the Kirby-Desai Tattoo Removal Scale. As every person and every tattoo is unique, this scale takes multiple factors into consideration when determining how many treatments it will take to remove your tattoo. Most tattoos take between 5 and 15 treatments to remove.

• First Stage
  After your initial visit, you will return every 8 to 12 weeks. It may take several visits to see any results. As your body first starts to break down the ink, you may not see any significant changes yet.
• Middle Stages
  You'll notice the black and darker color inks fading and the brighter color inks such as red and blue gradually lightening.
• Final Stages
After 5 to 15 visits, a tattoo may be completely cleared, although some stubborn colors such as white may not be removed. Most of the ink will be absorbed by your body. Your tattoo should be barely visible or not visible at all!

Why do some tattoos take longer to treat?

Individual factors affect how your tattoo responds to the laser. They are:

• Unique Immune System
  Everyone's immune system is different and this is a factor during tattoo removal. Your body will break down the pigment at its own individual rate.
• Your Skin Tone
  Lighter skin tones typically have a higher success rate in laser tattoo removal but many skin types are treatable. Some patient's tattoos are significantly reduced in appearance after the first session.
• Types of Colors Used
  Black, red, dark orange and dark blue tattoos will usually respond relatively quickly to laser treatments. Green, purple, brown, light orange and light blue may require more visits. Our all new RevLite® laser is much more effective than older lasers at removing multicolored tattoos.
• Types of Ink Used
  Inks used for tattoos are not regulated so there are many inks out there that affect the skin in different ways. Amateur ink generally responds at a faster rate than professional ink.
• Depth of Tattoo
  A tattoo that is covered by another has more ink and depth in the skin, therefore requiring additional laser treatments. Professional tattoos run deeper in the skin, requiring more treatments than amateur tattoos.

How do I get the best results?

Most patients are thrilled after their initial few treatments, but as they undergo the middle stages of removal they sometimes become impatient. It's important to remember that not every session will have the same effect. Though the process remains consistent, your body may react differently from treatment to treatment. For optimal results, follow our instructions as closely as possible. This will ensure the most thorough removal in the shortest amount of time.

We use the RevLite and Medlite C6 lasers made by HOYA ConBio specifically for tattoo removal. These state-of-the-art Q-switched Nd:Yag lasers are considered the gold standard for tattoo removal.
