Cindy: Dr. Anne, I am interested in fillers but some of my friends who have had fillers around their nose and mouth look like they have fat, flat monkey faces. Is there anything that can be done to fill the face without making the face look fatter?

Dr. White: Great question, Cindy! You know, the most important thing with fillers is to choose the right Cosmetic Surgeon to inject the fillers.

The youthful face is in the shape of an inverted triangle, widest at the mid face, narrowest at the chin. As we age we lose elasticity in our skin and volume in our subcutaneous tissues. The fat normal pads (like the cheek fat pad) descend and move towards the middle of our faces. Our cheeks become flatter and we develop jowls. All in all our faces become more squared off instead of triangular, much like a beach ball when it loses its air.

With fillers we can reinflate the face. Volume creates lift. It I important to fill not just the wrinkles and folds, but to augment flattened cheeks and even volumize the periphery of the face.
