Here are questions that Dr. Anne L. White had answered from patients and those considering treatment. Have a concern or question about treatment options? Ask Dr. White your own question.
Jessica: Dr. Anne, my summer tan is wearing off and now I am seeing ugly brown spots on my skin. I guess my tan was hiding them but to me it looks like I have even more than I had in the spring. Is there anything you can do to help me?
Dr. White: You know, Jessica, the sun truly is our enemy when it comes to the health and beauty of our skin. UV radiation from the sun not only causes cancer but accelerates the normal aging process. When you get home tonight look at the skin of your significant other's bottom and compare it to the skin of their face. The face gets significantly more sun exposure than the bottom, except, I suppose, in the case of nudists. In our country the left side of the face ages more quickly because we drive on the left. In the UK the right side of the face ages more quickly because Brits drive on the right.
It is not uncommon for people to tan either in the tanning bed or at the pool or beach in an attempt to hide their age spots. The tanning creates more brown spots and they get in a vicious cycle of tan, brown spots, tan, brown spots. I don't tell my patients to stay inside, just be responsible about wearing a sunscreen every day. If you leave your sunscreen next to your toothbrush, you will be less likely to forget it.
Beyond sunscreens, topical creams that inhibit the production of melanin can be applied to help fade the age spots. Sometimes we use chemical peels as well to accelerate the fading process. And most effective of all are IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and Fractional Lasers. It is important to consult with a physician skin care expert if you are considering a laser procedure so they can advise you about which procedures are safe and effective for your individual skin type.
